Nov. 6th

With all the excitement and hullabaloo the last week, I'm feeling especially brain-dead. This, as you could have expected, means straight music and no chatter. In honor of this upcoming weekends festivities, I'm going to attempt to set the mood. Friday, myself and

WAXPLOITATION! DJ's will be throwing the official funky president party at Club Deville, in celebration of our newly elected president. Then on Sunday, me and the Sock Hop gang will be twisting the night away at the Parish for the Second Sunday Sock Hop. It will be a long and dance-filled weekend.

I'll kick off with two funk jams in honor of Friday's gig, then hit you with two R&B cuts for Sunday's gig, then close it out with the clutch-and-hug ladies choice.

Wow. Somehow, as with any great blog, a simple thank you seems insufficient. I used to think I was...reasonably...conversant with the broad outline of post-1945 American popular music. Turns out I had literally no idea. The more you and your dedicated brothers and sisters in the digging and DJ community take the time to post, the more we, your humble, very humble audience, realize that there's an entire world of music - and brilliant, hard working musicians - of which we've been completely ignorant. I'll cite Los Stardusters as an example: certainly I'd heard of Rufus Thomas, but I'd never heard of
"All Night Worker" or the Stardusters, and all they did was record a classic. Or how about Jodi Gales, Patty and the Emblems, Sunny and the Sunliners, Gail Anderson: music of incredible vitality that is virtually unknown. All of it would be lost forever, and we'd all be poorer, if not for those few who take the time to preserve it. I'll stop the toasting now and just say thanks very much, congratulations on your wedding, and I hope you keep on rocking.
