Kick Off...

I'm taking my record blog off of the myspace and going to do it here now, independant of all the spammers and lurkers. I'll be scanning, ripping and sharing my newest and favorite 45's and even attempt to comment on some of them. For those of you who are new to me, I dj frequently in the Austin area with The Second Sunday Sock Hop Djs, as well as with the funk premiers, the Waxploitation! Djs. Hope yall enjoy. - Gabe a.k.a. Second Line Social

Betty Harris - 12 Red Roses
This is my newest find to add to my New Orleans soul 45s. Produced by the top dog in NOLA, Alan Toussaint, it bridges the gap between the early R&B sound and what
was to become Louisiana funk.

O.S. Grant - Greyhound pt. 1
I don't know a whole lot of this 45, but the label, Sarg, was based out of Luling, TX. There are a few quality R&B records on this label, although they're pretty hard to turn up. I'm not a huge saxophone fan, but i get by it on this one because of the chants and harmonies towards the latter half of the track.

Charles Brown & Amos Milburn - I want to go home
This is one of my favorite early deep soul cuts right now. I played this song as my last song every time i would dj at Spider House. After the long night, i just wanted to go home. Although Ace stuff tends to be packed with quality New Orleans R&B, I've been sleeping on both Charles Brown and Amos Milburn and have been trying to learn more by both of 'em.

The Manhattans -
Teach me the Philly Dog

I wish i would have had this one when we did the "Night of 1000 Dances" at the Sock Hop. It feels like it is supposed to rip open, but never quite does. I think that's what i dig about it, some lingering build up that stays steady throughout the track. I especially dig the shouts of all the other dances at the very end of it.

Thanks for sharing! I'm lovin' the Betty Harris track and definitely looking forward to more quality wax from the Second Line.
